COVID-19 Update: Can We Go Adventure in Nepal in 2021?

The country that boasts a stunning variety of natural beauty and cultural heritage and one of the best trekking and mountaineering destinations in the world had been severely affected by COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 turned the entire 2020 upside down and compelled us to either cancel or postpone travel plans to Nepal. While the world is waiting for the vaccine to roll out soon, we’re also waiting patiently for one more thing – will we be able to go for an adventure trek in Nepal in 2021?

As per the latest developments, Nepal has adopted a progressive approach to resuming flights. However, not everyone is allowed to enter the country at the same time; only Nepalis and international passengers from specific employment categories are granted entry into the country.

The good news is that the Nepalese government is reopening the Himalayas for the upcoming trekking seasons! Trekking agencies will be allowed to operate with their groups and climb the mountains.

The Nepalese government announced in October that the Everest region will be open to trained mountaineers and trekkers as well as trekking agencies and is issuing licenses for the spring season!

But visiting Nepal will not be as simple as it used to be. Travelers are required to seek prior approval, provide their itinerary details and mostly travel with their agency or organized group.

Rudra Singh Tamang, the director-general of the Department of Tourism of Nepal has said, “The country is going to be reopened not for all visitors but only mountaineers and trekkers who have taken prior approval to be permitted to visit Nepal. We are only allowing a section of travelers who we know we can manage.”

Travelers are required to submit proof of negative COVID-19 test report, proof of health insurance and stay in quarantine for a week in a Kathmandu hotel. But these requirements will be changing as we go.
