Driftwood Adventures has joined forces with Tlayudona to create a cultural immersion trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. Oaxaca was recently named the No. 1 city in the world according to Travel and Leisure. for their vibrant cultures, beautiful weather, landscape that spans from soaring peaks to cerulean surf, as well as some of the country’s most iconic architecture. It is a photographers dream! Not into photography? That’s OK. We will be sampling some amazing cuisine, tasting Mezcal, and learning about local artisan crafts.

Tlayudona works with predominately women hosts and artisans, their core team is also made up of all women. Women’s contributions are central to every aspect of Oaxaca and yet they are often still invisible. As a group we will learn how to cook local Oaxacan cuisine, try Alebrije-painting, learn how to make chocolate and attend a local dyeing and weaving demonstration. All proceeds stay in Oaxaca with the highest percentage going to the local artisan hosts.

We will visit Hierve el Aqua, a Calcareous rock formation that look as if a waterfall has been frozen to the side of a cliff. Established hiking paths bring you right up to the cascades edge. There will also be an opportunity to explore Monte Alban, a UNESCO World Heritage site perched atop a 1300 foot tall plateau. Most of what you will see was built by the Zaputec’s, indigenous peoples who are thought to have settled in the region as early as 800BC.

It will be a week full of culture immersion with local artisans and photography workshops. We keep our groups small, in order to provide you with top notch photography instruction. It is just not enough to simply see and photograph a place. Our philosophy is that thoughtful information on cultural and natural history goes a long way in providing a unique connection to the amazing locations we visit.
